WUI Construction: What It Takes to Build for Wildfire Risk

Jake Bruton visits a home under construction near Glenwood Springs, Colorado, to explore how building materials and design choices help reduce wildfire risk in the wildland-urban interface (WUI). He examines fire-resistant exterior cladding, a Class A-rated roof assembly, enclosed soffits, and metal roofing, explaining why the complete assembly matters more than an individual product’s rating. The tour also covers deck construction, synthetic decking, defensible space around the home, and exterior sprinkler systems. With input from architect Steve Baczek’s project, Bruton discusses how material selection, construction details, and landscaping strategies work together to address wildfire exposure.
