Working on a John Staub Period Revival Home

Brent Hull reflects on working on a John Staub–designed house in Fort Worth, a period revival home from the 1920s that he admired for years before getting the chance to restore it. He talks about the parapet front, the handmade clay roof tile, the ironwork, and the plaster moldings, all of which show how early twentieth-century architects drew on European design. The roof is still in near-perfect condition after a century, so it stays. The renovation opens up a cramped kitchen and replaces failing clad windows with long-lasting wood ones. Along the way, he finds early insulating sheathing in the walls, a glimpse into how builders approached historic construction.
