This is Vertical Harvest. Sitting on half an acre of land, it produces as much food as an equivalent 250-acre farm. That represents roughly 500x more efficient land use than traditional farming methods.

But if vertical farming is so efficient, why isn’t it more widespread? And where does it actually make the most sense?

In this episode, we tour one of America’s newest and most advanced vertical farming facilities located just outside Portland, Maine.

What we found is that vertical farming is far more complex than simply “plants on shelves,” and significantly more interesting than most people realize.
