Why These Roof Trusses Are Unlike Anything You've Seen Before
Jake Bruton walks through a non-standard truss detail on a custom home build in Kansas, where the mechanical system runs through a plenum space built into the roof trusses. The unusual element here is a diagonal plenum layout — an unconventional solution developed collaboratively between the project manager and the truss engineer to accommodate multiple large ducts passing through structurally limited sections of the truss. Rather than forcing 90-degree turns, the design follows a direct, angled path. The trusses vary in depth and elevation throughout to account for both HVAC requirements and ceiling height changes across different rooms. Every truss in the sequence ends up unique, with its own internal bracing configuration.
