Why Texas Builds with 1-1/8" Subfloor Sheathing

Steve Baczek of The Build Show talks floor framing with Kevin McGuire, of BT Grace Homes, on a job site in Houston. They look at open web floor trusses spaced 16 inches on center, with top chord bearing that keeps the subfloor close to grade. They discuss how trusses leave open space for plumbing, electrical, and ductwork, and why the system feels stiff underfoot. A thick, glued and screwed subfloor adds strength, helps limit squeaks, and works with the truss flange to create composite action. Back in the studio, Steve walks through framing plans, span direction, layout on a four-foot grid, and foundation details for top chord bearing trusses.
