Wade Paquin of WKP Builders tours his newly purchased headquarters — a converted post-and-beam timber frame building — with fellow builder Matt Risinger. After 23 years in business, Wade made the jump from renting to owning commercial property, prioritizing both location and the right building type. The open-plan main workspace centers around custom-built tables, with project managers facing each other to encourage collaboration. The space mixes custom walnut and oak furniture with IKEA pieces, and features large-format architectural photography, job site mockups displayed as sculpture, and a wood stove that gets lit every morning. Wade also touches on the financial side of buying commercial real estate — including the 30% down requirement in Rhode Island — and the importance of working with a CPA and structuring savings deliberately from the start.
