Where Closed Cell Spray Foam Belongs in a High-Performance Home

Mike Conneely of Greenside Design Build walks through where his team uses closed cell spray foam insulation in a high-performance home. He explains that it protects sprinkler pipes and plumbing in cold attics and below garages from freezing, while also air sealing corners, rim joists, and tight cavities. He points out thermal breaks around steel beams and masonry chimney walls, and describes a hybrid insulation approach that pairs foam with fiberglass and mineral wool batts. Connolly also covers vapor-open wall assemblies that dry in both directions, and a glycol-filled sprinkler system that avoids boxing and foaming pipes in a large unheated sport court.
