Brent Hull explores the history of the ALICO Building in Waco and why the skyscraper became a symbol of civic ambition in the early 20th century. He traces the city's rise through the suspension bridge era, its competition with larger Texas cities, and the decision to commission one of the state's leading architectural firms, Sanguinet & Staats. Hull highlights the building's steel-frame construction, fire-resistant design, and classical proportions, including its strong base, vertical shaft, and ornamental cornice. The discussion contrasts this neoclassical skyscraper tradition with later glass-box architecture and examines how historic buildings contribute to a city's identity and sense of permanence.
