Why does the White House look the way it does? Or Monticello? The answer traces back 250 years to a 16th-century Italian stonemason named Andrea Palladio — a craftsman who studied the ruins of Rome, cracked the proportional system the Greeks and Romans built with, and became the most copied architect in history. In this episode of Master Builder, we trace Palladio's path from apprentice mason to author of The Four Books of Architecture — and how his ideas crossed an ocean, through Thomas Jefferson, to shape the buildings we still call American.
