How We Made This Detailed Doric Architectural Detail

Today on the Georgian house, we’re making the intricate gutta detail that sits beneath the triglyphs. Using a custom-machined jig, multiple router setups, and Spanish cedar, we’re able to create the precise cone-shaped pieces needed for this classical architectural detail.

We’ll walk through the entire woodworking process, from routing and sanding the gutta pieces to cutting them to size and attaching them to the main triglyph assembly. We’ll also explain why Spanish cedar was chosen for these highly detailed pieces and how these elements help define the Doric order.

With around 30 of these pieces being made for the frieze, this is a detailed process that really shows how traditional architectural millwork can be recreated with modern woodworking techniques.
