We Beveled the Ridge! Trigger Warning for Framers

Overframed Roof Build - Soderberg Project

Is beveling the ridge beam overkill? Probably. Did we do it anyway because the "keyboard carpenters" dared us to? Absolutely.

In this build, we tackle an overframed roof (sometimes called a California or Scotch valley) on the Soderberg project. We walk through the technical side of the process, including the "laser dot trick" for layout, calculating diagonals, and using BuildCalc to determine accurate backing angles.

We also dive into the debate of whether beveling your ridge and sleepers is worth the extra minute of work—spoiler: it makes the geometry “dead tight.”

What You’ll Learn

  • Terminology: Understanding common rafters, valley jacks, and sleeper boards.
  • The Math: A step-by-step breakdown of the formula: 90 - (Sum of Backing Angles).
  • Pro Techniques: Using a Milwaukee rear-handle saw and ripping guides for clean 24-foot bevels.
  • Air Sealing: Why monopoly framing and scabbing on overhangs helps tape the roof deck to the wall effectively.
