Tips for Building in High-Ceiling Homes
Build Show Live 2026 Registration
Mike Conneely shares practical strategies for building in homes with unusually tall interior spaces, using a large basement sport court with a 29-foot ceiling as an example. He discusses strengthening tall walls with engineered lumber, heavier sheathing, and closer stud spacing to limit deflection. Mike also explains how the framing team plans ahead for scaffolding, drywall, electrical, HVAC, and fire sprinkler work at extreme heights. A temporary construction platform provides safer access for trades, while scaffolding proves more practical than a lift in the stepped basement. He also discusses tighter truss spacing to create a flatter, cleaner ceiling finish. Watch more of Mike's full episodes on The Build Show and follow him on Instagram at the links below.
