Wade Paquin is two hours into a demolition project on Block Island, walking through the unique logistics and regulations that come with tearing down a structure in such a remote location. Before any demo permit is issued, the property must be advertised for four consecutive weeks — a requirement aimed at giving someone the chance to relocate the house rather than demolish it. Nothing has moved yet. All debris is loaded into 50-yard dumpsters and barged to the mainland for sorting, running roughly $4,000–$5,000 per load. The team is also salvaging stone foundation material, old-growth beams, and a tongue-and-groove ceiling — and during demo, three layers of flooring are uncovered, offering a cross-section of the home's construction history.
