The Truth About Ocean Plastic

How Ocean Plastic Isn’t The Problem

I was a teenager on a cruise when I first saw ocean pollution up close. Late at night, I watched crew dumping garbage into the ocean—a stream of trash stretching toward the horizon.

But that was just the tip of the “trashberg.” And most of it… is plastic.

Plastic makes up roughly 80% of marine pollution, but it doesn’t always come from where you’d expect.

Most people imagine plastic waste as bottles, straws, and bags washing off beaches. But when The Ocean Cleanup set out to tackle the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, they discovered something surprising:

  • Over 75% of the plastic wasn’t typical consumer waste
  • Much of it didn’t originate from shorelines
  • Cleanup was far more complex than expected

So they made a critical pivot.

Instead of only cleaning plastic already in the ocean, they shifted focus upstream—targeting the sources before the plastic ever reaches open water.

This video explores:

  • The real composition of ocean plastic pollution
  • What’s actually floating in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
  • Why cleanup alone isn’t enough
  • How river systems play a major role in global plastic flow
  • Innovative solutions like interception systems
