The CARPENTER'S Guide to Perfect Wall Layout

If you can snap lines, you can frame straight, plumb, and square walls—every time. In this video, we’re showing exactly how we lay out walls for a complex rake section using the story pole method and a rotary laser to keep everything dead-on from the foundation up.

You’ll see how we:

  • Square the main corner so every wall stays true and parallel
  • Use story poles to “idiot-proof” wall heights across multiple floors
  • Handle step-downs and cantilevers without losing reference
  • Transfer roof pitch and rafter length straight from layout math
  • Break long laser shots into smaller chunks for accuracy
  • Make micro-adjustments (less than ¼”) before framing starts

This method turns blueprints into chalk lines—zero guesswork, zero rework.

🧰 Tools & Materials:

  • Rotary laser + detector
  • Chalk line, Stabila tape
  • Story pole with full-scale marks
  • 2×6 and LVL top plates
  • I-joist rafters (height-above-plate layout)

💡 Why It Matters: Everything in a house starts with accurate layout. A perfect layout means straight walls, clean framing, and a roof system that drops right into place. This is the foundation for everything that comes next. If anything’s unclear, drop a comment and I’ll cover it in a future video. If you found this helpful—like, subscribe, and send it to the one framer who still “levels” their walls instead of plumbs them.
