Mike Conneely continues his look at an exterior stucco installation, focusing on the progression from the first scratch coat to the second coat and finished surface. He explains how the rough first coat creates a strong bond for the next layer, while control joints help manage movement and cracking as the cement-based stucco cures over a wood-framed wall. Mike also highlights the drainage mat behind the stucco, metal trim at transitions, and fiberglass mesh within the stucco mix. The finished surface can range from modern and smooth to more traditional textures, while the drainage layer helps keep the wall assembly dry.
