Dining Room Ceiling Build | Custom Nickel Gap Installation

Today we’re getting started on a custom dining room ceiling — and this one is special. The design was hand-sketched by Brent, and now it’s time to bring it to life and do it justice with some detailed finish carpentry.

This ceiling will feature large beams, custom trim details, and nickel gap paneling. While we wait on beam material, we jump into installing the tongue-and-groove boards and dialing in layout, spacing, and overall symmetry.

In this video:
  • Layout and chalk line prep for beams and ceiling panels
  • Installing oversized nickel gap boards for proper scale and proportion
  • Strategies for blending mismatched wood tones and glue-ups
  • Blind nailing techniques for a clean, seamless finish
  • Working around obstacles like the fireplace for a tight fit

We also make solid progress on day one, completing a full section of the ceiling and getting a strong start on the next. Along the way, we deal with real jobsite challenges — from tricky cuts to handling heavy custom doors that need to be refinished and sent back out for sanding.

This project is a great example of how planning, layout, and attention to detail come together to create a high-end finish.
