Inside an Ultra-Efficient Custom Home's Unusual Heating Solution

Build Show Live 2026 Registration
Jake Bruton of Aarow Building walks through a masonry heater installation with project manager Isaac Rushing on a custom home build near Kansas City. Rushing explains how the unit's small firebox, high-temp concrete core, and internal channels route flue gases on a long path before venting, storing heat in the surrounding mass rather than releasing it quickly like a traditional fireplace. They cover the stone or brick veneer required for thermal mass, the cardboard expansion joint that allows movement, and the dedicated combustion air damper needed in a tightly sealed, highly insulated house. The heater also serves as backup heat during power outages.
