Jordan Smith, an Austin-based custom builder, is planning a wet room with a shower and tub, where both the walls and ceiling need to be fully waterproofed. He explains that USG Durock® Brand Cement Board with EdgeGuard™ is water-durable but still requires a waterproofing membrane in wet-area applications.

He then turns to USG Fiberock® Brand AquaSmart™ Tile Backerboard, a fiber-reinforced gypsum panel with integrated waterproof performance. Skeptical, he sets up a backyard test using a 24-inch water column against the panel for 48 hours. Afterward, he inspects the panel's face, back and edges for moisture, checking for wicking along the adhesive line and water penetration beneath the surface layer.
