Jake Bruton shares three strategies for protecting a construction business when economic conditions shift. First, he advocates for flexibility — contractors who can pivot between custom builds and renovation work are better positioned to weather slowdowns, since remodeling demand tends to hold even when new construction stalls. Second, he makes the case for converting fixed overhead into variable costs wherever possible, from office space to staffing, so the business can scale down without bleeding cash. Third, and most emphatically, he warns against compromising backlog quality out of desperation — bad projects don't improve just because the pipeline is thin.
