We're back on the Dawson barndominium for a site tour and a build science segment we've been wanting to do for a while. The sheet metal crew is back on site knocking out soffits and trim, the insulation is done, and every mechanical — electric, HVAC, plumbing — is in and inspected. Before any of it gets covered up, Josh walks through how we're handling interior sound control on a 4-bedroom-plus-office layout with roughly 1,800 sq ft of upstairs living over the primary suite.

Here's the problem most barndo builds run into: once you've got open web floor trusses full of duct work and wiring, you can cram batt insulation in there for sound — but you just gave up every bit of the maneuverability that made open web joists worth using. No more fishing a wire. No more adding a can light or running speaker cable down the road. And if something fails up there, good luck getting to it.

So instead of packing the cavity, we're layering a 1/4" acoustic fiber board on the surface — under the subfloor above and over the ceiling below — to break up the vibration path before it ever reaches the stud or the truss. Same principle as the ZIP System air barrier on the exterior walls, just applied to sound instead of air and heat. Josh shows the whole install: trimming with nothing but a utility knife, stapling it up, taping the seams to close off any gap noise can travel through, and why doing both faces of a wall gets you dramatically better results than doing one.

We're concentrating it between floors — kids' bedrooms sitting directly over the primary — plus the dividing wall between the living area and the primary suite, the kitchen and pantry wall, and the walkways above. The laundry room gets a pass and Josh explains exactly why: three exterior walls and nothing overhead means there's almost no transmission path to worry about.

ABOUT QUIETURE
