Jake Bruton visits a major home renovation project in Westlake, Texas with builder Ryan Hay, where an existing house is getting a significant addition. They walk through decisions around mixing window and door packages from multiple manufacturers — steel, Western, and Andersen — balancing budget constraints with design integrity. Ryan explains how early pre-construction involvement allowed for meaningful value engineering without compromising the final result. The conversation also covers the realities of scope creep in remodels, the importance of cost transparency with clients, and how an informed homeowner shapes better outcomes. The addition opens up sweeping views of downtown Austin through a large sliding glass wall.
