Home Foundation Surprises on a Home Addition

Foundation Surprises on a Home Addition

On a large home addition and remodel, Stephanie Dailey and her crew are preparing to pour new foundation walls — and running into the real-world surprises that come with working on existing structures. A deeper-than-expected sewer line forces a significant change in foundation wall height, adding roughly seven feet of depth over the 49-foot addition. On the back of the house, a planned framed wall gets redesigned as an engineered retaining wall, creating usable parking above while also serving as a wind buffer for the lower patio. New rebar is drilled and epoxied into the existing foundation throughout, tying old and new construction together before the pour.
