CJ Nielsen explains why the electrical meter main deserves attention early in the home design process. Working on the Pacific Northwest coast, he sees how salt air corrodes metal meter and panel enclosures, including on a fairly new install already showing wear. He compares semi-flush mount and surface mount setups, noting that recessing the meter main into the wall reduces exposed conduit, limits corrosion points, and makes waterproofing easier. On a ground-up build, he shows a recessed meter main behind a sealed, weatherstripped door, planned with the framing so the equipment stays protected from weather, sun, and snow.
