1920s Storybook Cottage | Final Walkthrough & Carpentry Detail Tour
We’re wrapping up this incredible project with a full walkthrough of a beautifully restored 1920s Charles Stevens Beck home here in Dallas, Texas. This house is packed with character, craftsmanship, and some of the most unique architectural details you’ll ever see.
In this video, we walk through the entire home showcasing the carpentry work, custom millwork, and historic elements that make this project truly special.
What Makes This House Special:
- Designed in a storybook cottage style with Spanish influences
- Signature “drunken” brickwork with irregular, hand-crafted character
- Stunning pecky cypress front door with a brick arch entry
- Original 1920s details blended with modern craftsmanship
Highlights From the Walkthrough:
- Restored original doorbell with brass ring (pre-doorbell camera era)
- Custom carpentry repairs on original doors and structural elements
- Massive exposed timbers throughout the home
- Unique plaster staircase balustrade with open cutouts
- Custom kitchen cabinetry scribed into uneven plaster ceilings
- Hand-built niches, arches, and millwork details
- Double pocket doors with deep, historic raised panels
Craftsmanship Details:
This house is full of one-of-a-kind details — from “pig’s feet” molding profiles to double bead edges carried throughout shelves, windows, and countertops. Every piece was carefully designed to match the original character of the home.
You’ll also see creative solutions like floating shelves integrated into tongue-and-groove walls, custom cabinetry, and even a hidden “surprise bar” built into what used to be a coat closet.
Unique Architectural Features:
- French Dutch doors (a rare combination of double and split-door design)
- Original gun cabinet with leaded glass and carved details
- Handcrafted bar with curved woodwork and scalloped edges
- Eyebrow arch windows and French casements
- Extremely irregular framing requiring detailed scribing work
Upstairs Renovation Work:
Nearly all doors were custom rebuilt to match original profiles using custom knives and traditional joinery techniques. Bedrooms, bathrooms, and closets were redesigned with a mix of historic style and modern functionality.
The master closet and cabinetry feature high-end materials, detailed panel work, and custom glass accents that tie into the overall character of the home.
A Project Full of Surprises:
During the renovation, we even discovered a vintage hand plane hidden inside one of the walls — a small piece of history left behind by the original craftsmen.
Final Thoughts:
This project was an incredible blend of restoration and craftsmanship. From structural fixes to intricate millwork, every detail was carefully considered to honor the original design while bringing the home back to life.
Huge thanks to everyone involved — the homeowners, builders, designers, and the entire crew who made this transformation possible.
