Creating an Organic Plaster-Style Finish With Joint Compound

Lydia Crowder, speaking from the USG Sheetrock Brand Studio, walks through one of her favorite drywall textures: a forgiving, hand-applied finish that can read anywhere from smooth to rugged. She loads thinned joint compound onto a curved knife and skips it across the wall in random, organic arcs, leaving some open spots before pulling the knife flat to blend. She explains how timing, mud consistency, and knife movement shape the result, and how to avoid chatter and lap lines. Light sanding fixes imperfections, and touch-ups blend in easily. She also covers sample boards, material usage, and tool options like knives, hawks, and trowels.
