Breaking Ground on a Huge Custom Barndominium in Dawson, Texas | Texas Best Construction

Today we’re kicking off a brand-new project in Dawson, Texas! This one’s special for a lot of reasons—not just because it’s going to be a massive custom barndominium, but because it’s in an area that holds a lot of memories for me.

As a kid, I used to spend a couple of weeks every summer not far from here, hanging out at a small lake house with my family. So coming back all these years later to help lay the foundation for someone else’s dream home in the same area—it’s a full-circle moment.

This episode marks Day One of our Dawson Barndominium Build.

We’re starting with site prep, including:

  • Soil testing
  • Marking elevations
  • Bringing in select fill to level the build site

We’re moving serious dirt on this one—truckloads of it—to create a strong, stable pad for the foundation. The property has about a 12–14 inch elevation difference, so we’re working carefully to level everything out before the concrete phase begins.

We also break down some key engineering concepts that play a major role in build quality:

  • PVR (Potential Vertical Rise) and soil movement
  • Site-specific foundation design
  • Working with engineers to match real-world conditions

It may not be the flashiest part of construction, but this stage is critical to ensuring the home performs well for decades.

Stick around to the end to see how far we get with the dirt work—and a few curveballs along the way, including needing extra loads of select fill to handle the slope.

There’s a lot more coming as this project takes shape over the next few weeks:

  • Foundation and slab work
  • Framing
  • Interior and exterior finishes
  • Signature Texas Best craftsmanship throughout

If you enjoy barndominiums, custom home builds, or seeing the behind-the-scenes process, this Dawson, Texas series is one you won’t want to miss.
