Home Before & After: Replacing a Rotten Deck in Colorado!

Before & After: Replacing a Rotten Deck in Colorado!

We’re tearing out an old, poorly built deck and replacing it with a brand-new structure designed to last through Colorado’s wild seasons.

The original deck wasn’t flashed properly and was literally falling off the house—so this time, we’re doing it right.

In this video, we walk through the full process of replacing a small 8x10 deck with a much sturdier 10x18 platform.

We’ll pour a new caisson, set beams, and frame everything tight over the existing concrete pad.

You’ll see how we:

  • Check layout and laser level the beam line
  • Frame the platform with proper backing for border boards and rail posts
  • Lay out and cut stairs using simple framing math
  • Snap clean deck board lines to avoid ripped pieces
  • Build tight mitered skirt corners that hold through expansion and contraction

If you’re replacing an old deck or building in the mountains, this video breaks down the details that matter—from footings to finishes.

👉 Tools & Tips in this video:

  • Using a laser for layout and elevation checks
  • Creating clean stair layouts with a speed square
  • Framing tricks for perfect deck board reveals
  • Keeping miters tight through Colorado’s freeze-thaw cycles
