A Little Metal, a Big Impact: Brass Inlays in Tile and Hardwood Floors

Stephanie Dailey walks us through this house that uses solid brass bar as a design detail in tile and hardwood floors, and she walks us through three spots in one house. In the powder bath, a brass border sits inside a black marble tile floor, set slightly proud so the thin-set brings it flush. The entry uses brass inlaid between hardwood borders, where reclaimed flooring and light sanding give the metal a scuffed, lived-in patina. In the kitchen, the same stock transitions between tile and wood. Unlacquered brass is meant to age as a living finish, and it cuts easily with the right blade. It’s pricey, though thinner stock costs less, and trim from Schluter or Mapei offers a lower-cost alternative.
