Brent Hull walks through Longwood, the octagonal antebellum mansion in Natchez designed by Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan and left unfinished when construction workers abandoned the site at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. Spanning roughly 20,000 square feet, the Italianate Victorian residence retains its original marble flooring, a domed skylight, and a massive hand-carved wooden finial that once topped its roof. Hall points out preserved construction details throughout the site, including balloon framing, square nails, period mitre boxes, and early scaffolding, alongside finished elements like a coffered porch ceiling and Corinthian-style columns, offering a rare look at nineteenth-century building methods and craftsmanship frozen mid-project.
