1,700 Sq Ft Hybrid Steel Frame Barndominium in Burleson Texas

Framing update on our second Burleson, Texas barndominium — a hybrid steel frame build with 1,700 sq ft of living space, a 2,100 sq ft shop and about 700 sq ft of porches.

Josh Helm walks the whole layout before the windows go in and breaks down how we build it: steel for the roof lines, shop and porches, wood for the interior and the 2x6 exterior walls, and ZIP System wrapped around every bit of living space.

About 1,700 sq ft of living space
2,100 sq ft shop
Roughly 700 sq ft of porches
Gabled elevation with an 8 ft porch running the length

WHAT'S IN THIS ONE

Vaulted great room with an electric fireplace and an inset for the TV
Primary suite with a tray ceiling and an inset entry so the bedroom door doesn't face the living room
Cathedral ceiling built into the attic, leaving room to run ductwork up and over the unit
AdvanTech subfloor system over the stairs and landing
2,100 sq ft shop with a shop restroom, 4 ft wide stairs and storage underneath
A 14 ft door so you can back an RV in, or drive it all the way through
Flat purlins framed around every window and door on the shop so spray foam can't ooze past the J-trim
ZIP System enveloping the living space as the thermal break, air barrier and water mitigation
Continuous purlins and a WRB under the shop windows where ZIP isn't used
Extended overhangs, sheet ledge and liquid flashing at every nail hole and around the perimeter
