Tour the Custom Sherman Shell Only Barndominium with RV Shop Space | Texas Best Construction

Build Show Live 2026 Registration

This custom barndominium video walkthrough showcases a unique rapid post-frame building project built by the Texas Best Construction team. The structure relies on an incredibly efficient pre-panelized shell setup featuring three-ply vertical columns spaced at ten-foot intervals along the main structural lines.

With an impressive 20-foot eave height on this specific layout, the architectural design achieves tremendous vertical clearance that completely transforms both the residential quarters and adjoining workshop zones. The building envelope utilizes a complete exterior ZIP System wrap on all exterior walls and across the roof panels, creating a massive air barrier and highly durable moisture seal.

This specific envelope configuration is highly important because the client selected a high-end standing seam metal roof profile, which requires complete underlayment and sheathing support rather than a simple open-purlin system.

The outdoor layout includes 1,500 square feet of covered porch space, distributed symmetrically with 750 square feet running down each side of the structure. The construction team opted for custom structural steel framework throughout these expansive porches rather than traditional wood columns to avoid the warping, twisting, and structural movement that can develop with massive, high-elevation porch designs.

Moving inside, the layout reveals 1,600 square feet of clear, open workshop space, configured to allow owners to bring large recreational vehicles directly inside through the main central bay entrance. The client operates in the mechanical trades, so the interior features an early installation of an advanced multi-zone HVAC heating and cooling system that provides independent climate control for both the workshop environment and the residential living quarters.

The layout incorporates a functional office area, a dedicated storage closet positioned neatly beneath the structural stairs, and a large upper-level mechanical room. The transition between the workspace and residential framing uses a continuous ZIP System fire-wall assembly to help protect the living space from potential automotive fumes, fuel odors, or chemical vapors.

The custom residential framing showcases detailed interior adjustments, including a 2x6 framing layout constructed inside the main rapid-frame posts. This creates a deep, passable wall cavity that allows mechanical lines and building insulation to run completely behind the vertical framing studs, creating an exceptionally strong and continuous thermal barrier around the interior rooms.

The custom floor plan also includes a lowered gym and workout area, dropped to match the exact shop elevation and accommodate an integrated overhead garage door bay. On the second-story layout, the framework highlights 16-inch-deep open-web floor joists, leaving substantial interstitial space for running large central ductwork without cutting or damaging structural beams.

The upper floor opens into an expansive media and entertainment area, along with a secondary multifunctional game room that takes full advantage of the vaulted spaces created by the overhead parallel-chord truss system.
