We Built a Sports Barndominium with Steel Construction
In this video, you’ll see our crew work together to raise massive 24” steel I-beams into place, precisely set them on top of pre-cut vertical columns, and secure them for the long haul. We’re talking about steel so big and heavy that each span weighs thousands of pounds. This is the kind of heavy-duty framing that makes a sports barndominium like this possible.
We’ll walk you through the engineering behind the steel frame, the reason we went with oversized I-beams, and how we’re building for strength, longevity, and flexibility. This sports barndominium isn’t just for basketball and workouts — it’s designed so that, in the future, it could be converted into a collector’s car shop, event space, or other large-scale facility if the owners ever wanted. That means careful planning now for maximum versatility later.
The full-court basketball court will be built to high school regulation width, with slightly shorter length for a better fit in the structure. We’ve planned for a custom flooring system, climate control throughout, and a drop-down elevation design to prevent water intrusion and keep the space dry. This is a level of planning you don’t see in every barndominium build.
Up above the gym, there will be luxurious living quarters complete with a walk-out balcony, perfect for watching the action below or enjoying peaceful evenings overlooking the property. Inside the workout facility, there will be top-tier features — a sauna, cold plunge, weightlifting and cardio areas, and more. This is the ultimate combination of lifestyle and functionality.
You’ll also see how we tackled logistical challenges on this property, including removing a previous 35x60 structure, excavating through massive rock formations, and rerouting existing power lines to maximize usable yard space. Every step has been carefully thought through, and today’s steel framing is a huge milestone.
One of the coolest things about this build is the teamwork involved. Our crew uses 40’ telehandler Skytrack, chains, straps, and precision alignment tools to make sure every beam is exactly where it needs to be. We double-check measurements, adjust for the slope of the single-slope roofline, and lock each beam in place so the frame can support the weight of the massive roof spans and upper levels.
This is Day 1 of standing the steel, and while we’ve still got a lot more beams to raise, it’s incredible to see the structure start to take shape. Once the steel frame is fully up, we’ll be moving on to roof purlins, wall girts, and the exterior sheathing — in this case, a premium Zip System that will protect the structure and prepare it for finishing. If you love barndominium builds, steel construction, or just watching incredible projects come together, you’re going to want to follow along with every update on this one. This is a rare combination of a dream home and professional-level sports facility all under one roof, and we’re excited to show you every step of the journey. Whether you’re here for the construction techniques, the engineering insights, or just to watch something epic get built, you’re in the right place. Make sure you hit that subscribe button, turn on notifications, and leave us a comment letting us know what part of this build you’re most excited to see completed. We’ve got a long road ahead — but standing the steel is a major milestone, and it’s only going to get more exciting from here.
